CFS: Narrative medicine (The Intima)

Submissions for Spring 2015 edition of The Intima are currently open. The submission deadline is 11:59 PM EST on February 1st 2015. Contributors will receive notice of accept or regret by February 17th, 2015. You should receive a confirmation notice within 7 days of submission.

We publish articles from a variety of perspectives exploring Narrative Medicine, and its applications in healthcare and healing.  Narrative Medicine is interdisciplinary, drawing from a wide range of disciplines.  We encourage submissions that engage any of the

following: medicine in literature and/or poetry, biomedical ethics, history of medicine and/or science, music, religious and/or spiritual perspectives on medicine, health care communication, medical or biological anthropology, sociology of medicine, cross-cultural approaches to medicine, or medicine as represented in the visual arts and film.

Submissions can include:

  • Scholarly essays or articles geared towards educating a general
  • audience about Narrative Medicine
  • Non-Fiction, personal narratives or perspective pieces
  • Fiction, Short Fiction
  • Field Notes, reflections on working in the field
  • Poetry
  • Studio Art, in any medium such as paintings, photographs, or prints
  • Audio or Visual Multimedia

Subject areas might include but are not limited to:

  • Personal narratives of illness from the patient and/or clinician perspectives
  • Grand narratives of public health, epidemics, and the globalization of disease
  • Analyses of historical or contemporary representations of illness and
  • The body in literature, art, popular culture, and the media
  • Discourse on the role of narrative in the greater health care reform debate

Submission Requirements

12 point times new roman font

  • Double spaced
  • Submit as a Word document (JPG or PNG format for images; MP3 for audio files)
  • No identifying information in the submission document
  • No headers, footers, or page numbers
  • Title in 12 point Times New Roman font, bold, underlined and centered
