Kienle Symposium — Medical Humanities: Clinical & Pedagogical Perspectives

The purpose of this Symposium is to provide a practical experience and pedagogical strategies for teaching in the field of medical humanities. Participants will have the opportunity to observe or participate in important aspects of medical education and clinical practice in an academic medical center in order to create and/or enhance medical humanities curricula in their home institutions.

We hope to attract teachers and scholars from various humanities disciplines (broadly defined, including visual and performing arts and social sciences) and from medical schools who teach—or who would like to teach—courses in the medical humanities to undergraduate or medical students. The Symposium is limited to 30 participants in order to provide ample opportunity for collegial interaction and community-building.

Registration fee: $400 includes a formal opening reception on Sunday evening, a closing dinner the following Friday, catered lunches each day, and coffee-break refreshments.

Through the generosity of the Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine, we are pleased to award three scholarships to cover registration fee and lodging. Initial selections will be based on the application essay.

Lodging: Lodging will be provided on campus for $42 per person per night ($252 for six nights), based on four-person occupancy in apartments with private bedrooms and a common bathroom. For participants who prefer to stay off-campus, a limited number of rooms is reserved at each of the hotels listed below until Friday, April 25 (30 days prior to the beginning of the Symposium). The Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine is closely allied with the Department of Humanities at the Penn State College of Medicine. Its programs are sustained through a generous endowment from Lawrence F. Kienle, M.D. and the late Jane Witmer Kienle, M.D.. Their vision was to find ways to encourage medical care that is both compassionate and competent, and that emphasizes the patient’s individual needs. The Center’s ongoing mission is to support projects that will ultimately render the delivery of health care more humane, both locally and nationally.
