Literature, Medicine & Medical Humanities Welcome
Although the MLA does not currently have a division or discussion group explicitly devoted to literature and medicine or medical humanities, many of us are working on representations of the body, sexuality, health, illness, disease and the health professions. Admittedly, the term “medical” humanities (the conventional name for this focus) is problematic (as my nursing colleagues at UConn will tell you because it connotes a focus on the authority and scope of practice of the physician). Likewise, many of us critically examine the “medicalization” of human experience and variety. So “humanities and health” might be a more capacious category.
In any case, this blog is designed for conversations, queries, and information shared among scholars whose work examines the discourses, practices, and performance of the body.
